She said that the theme for this year’s event is ‘Land Belongs to the Future -Let’s Climate Proof It.’ She noted that the country is headed for a dark future in as far as environment conservation is concerned, calling on the public to play their part wherever they are to rescue some areas from becoming deserts.

New Delhi, India – With India’s food security under threat with nearly 81 million hectares facing desertification, environment minister Prakash Javadekar said that the government was working on a plan to “stop and reverse the serios threat”. 

The minister said India would become “land degradation neutral” by 2030 if all critical stakeholders— ministries of environment, agriculture, water resources and land resources— worked together on a common implementation strategy. In India 69% of the land is dry land and 32% of the land is undergoing desertification.

“In India, we are facing the problem of degradetion of land, desertification of the land and creation of wasteland. All these are major challenges as it impacts the livelihood. As the (Narendra) Modi government has decided that poverty eradication is the mai objective of this government, to  the end we must make the contry degradation neutral by 2030″ Javadekar said.
